do you remember when Italia had 123% of all UNESCO sites
n November 1972, UNESCO signed a landmark convention to protect the common cultural heritage of humanity. Since then, the program to designate sites of outstanding cultural and natural importance has grown to become one of the world's most widely recognized international agreements, with the convention ratified by 193 state parties. Today, there are a grand total of 1,092 UNESCO World Heritage Sites worldwide, of which 845 are cultural, 209 are natural and 38 are a mixture.
The following infographic shows the 12 countries with the most World Heritage Sites worldwide and Italy grabs first position with 54. The vast majority of its sites are cultural with Pisa's Piazza dei Miracoli (home to the famous leaning tower), the archeological remains of Pompei, Herculaneum and Torre Annunziata as well as the historical centers of Florence, Naples and Rome among the best known.
China comes second with 53 sites while Spain rounds off the top three with 47.
The first U.S. sites added to the list were the Meda Verde National Park and Yellowstone National Park in 1978. Since then, the U.S. total has grown to 23 sites, placing it tenth overall. In October 2017, the U.S. and Israel announced that they would both withdraw from UNESCO, citing "continuing anti-Israel bias". The U.S. has turned its back on the organization before, leaving under Ronald Reagan in the 1980s before rejoining in 2003. The latest withdrawal will come into effect on December 31st of this year.
