China aiming for submarine supremacy

Quantitatively, China aims to surpass the number of US attack subs by 2020.

Qualitatively, China is working on stealth magnetic propulsion, aiming for 2030.

But it's OK, Trump has built a great personal relationship with Xi JinPing.

China Is Testing Silent ‘Magnetic Drive’ Submarines to Evade the US Navy

It almost sounds like something out of a certain 1980s spy thriller: China, according to state media, recently tested a new magnetic propulsion system that could make its military submarines much quieter and harder for the US Navy to detect.

But engineers in other countries have been working on magnetic ship drives for decades, without much to show for it. There's no guarantee Chinese engineers will succeed where others have failed.

If the magnetic drive proves reliable and Beijing succeeds in installing it in a large number of subs, the Chinese fleet could begin to match the American fleet underwater. And that could partially negate one of the United States' biggest military advantages over China. The US and Chinese navies each possess around 50 attack submarines, but America's undersea boats are much stealthier than are the less sophisticated Chinese boats.

Will stealth actually work? If it follows the way that planes have gone, then no. A waste of time and money. You have the advantage of evading detection for a few years if you're lucky, and then detection technology improves drastically and then your game-changing technology becomes just another (albeit a bloody expensive) piece of military hardware.

Let the Chinese waste their resources. As long as we don't follow the same counter-productive route, we'll be the winners.

Sorry, my choice of words was imprecise.

Magnetic propulsion would not improve the stealth of the hull of submarines.

These subs would be "sound stealthy" as sonars would have to pick much lower sound levels.

(it's like a Dyson fan, much less moving parts = less noise)

I managed to get one of my 72 kids from F to B in Physics in less than 100 hours of coaching.

So I suppose I can summon a grasp of the causality between moving parts and noise.

Even if I'm just an old ox cart trader.

Having seen that movie made me an instant expert on the subject of magnetohydrodynamic drive. The truth is that the current traveling through the water would create gasses and noise, and the magnetic fields would induce a detectable magnetic signature.

This is faux news, a.k.a. propaganda by JeanV who hopes that an increase of the budget of the glorious Burkinabe Navy would lead to increased sales of camouflaged ox carts.
